POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
Rules &
Regulations for PDF
|
|
A postdoctoral appointment is usually a temporary
job held by a person who has completed his or her doctoral
studies. Postdoctoral appointments commonly last for periods
ranging between one year and five years, and are usually research-oriented.
The appointee is usually given the title of fellow or research
associate. Postdoctoral positions are most often taken in
the sciences and the arts. Although postdoctoral positions
are available to engineers as well, the lucrative salaries
available in industry to engineers with doctoral degrees cause
relatively few engineering Ph.D.s choose to attempt an academic
path unless their field of specialization is such that no
jobs exist or citizenship difficulties preclude obtaining
the equivalent of a green card.
|
|
Postdoctoral Fellow candidates are reviewed
by the Postdoctoral Committee, which meets four times annually.
Candidates are selected by the strengths of their academic
and research excellence, and proposed research.
|
|
As the post doctorate degree is, by definition,
the highest awarded in a field, fellowship certificate is
conferred at the completion of a post-doctorate fellow position.
Some postdoctorate positions share more in common with low-paid
adjunct jobs than continuing education. In some fields in
some countries, like the United States of America, there are
so many graduates that post-doctoral work is almost necessary.
|
|
Often academics will take a succession of
post-doctoral positions before achieving a faculty position
or leaving academia.
|
|
Advantages to work as a post-doc
|
|
However the extent to which abuses take place
varies greatly from one research group to another and between
countries. Working as a post-doc can also offer an opportunity
to travel widely to conferences and pursue further the areas
of research in which a post-doc is interested. Working hours
are often flexible and a postdoctorate often get to exercise
a great degree of control over their work.
